Mashup

The vocal of one track over the instrumental of another.

Detailed explanation

A mashup combines the vocal track (acapella) of one record with the instrumental of another. It is typically produced in a DAW beforehand and played as a finished track at the gig. Unlike a live blend, a mashup is a prepared studio product. It requires both tracks to have similar BPM and harmonically compatible keys.

In practice

A mashup is the answer to the question of why you in particular should be playing that well-known track. Vocal from one record, instrumental from another — and suddenly it is your version. For it to work, tempo and key have to match, and both have to sit on the same phrase structure. Built live it is risky, prepared it is one of the most reliable moments in a set.
