Beatmatching
Bringing two tracks to the same tempo and phase.
Detailed explanation
Beatmatching is the basic technique of DJing. It has two steps: 1. Tempo matching — bring both tracks to an identical BPM (with the tempo fader). 2. Phase alignment — line the kicks of both tracks up (by nudging the jog wheel). A perfect beatmatch sounds like a single track. Learning to beatmatch by hand, without the sync button, is essential for understanding what the sync button does for you.
In practice
Track A is playing, track B is in your headphones. You can hear that B is faster — the kicks drift apart. You pull the tempo fader down a touch, listen again, correct. Now the tempos match but the hits are offset: a short nudge on the jog wheel rim pushes B onto A. The moment both kicks sound like one, you have beatmatched — and from there it only stays that way if you keep checking.
