What is beatmatching — and why does it matter so much?
Beatmatching means aligning two tracks so their beats land at exactly the same moment — before you blend from one to the other. The result is a seamless transition that the audience doesn't perceive as a “track change” but as a continuous flow.
Without beatmatching a transition sounds bumpy, rhythmically wrong and amateurish. With good beatmatching the join disappears — the music simply carries on.
Beatmatching consists of two parts: matching the tempo (bringing both tracks to the same BPM) and synchronising the phase (lining the beats up in time). Both have to be right — tempo alone isn't enough.
The sync button: yes or no?
Almost all modern DJ programs have a sync button that handles beatmatching automatically. The honest answer: learn without it first.
Not because sync is “cheating” — but because without manual beatmatching you never really understand what's happening. You won't spot drift, you won't understand phase problems, and you can't play on equipment that has no sync. Learn it manually. Then use sync as a tool — not as a crutch.
What you need to practise
A DJ controller with a pitch fader
Almost every controller has one. The pitch fader changes the playback speed and with it the BPM of a track.
DJ headphones
For cueing the next track before it goes into the mix. A closed-back design for good isolation.
DJ software (Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor)
It shows you the BPM and the beat grid, and lets you cue through your controller's headphone socket.
2–3 tracks at a similar BPM
Start with tracks between 120 and 130 BPM (house, techno, EDM). At the beginning: tracks that sit close together (5 BPM apart at most).

Work out the BPM of the track that's playing
Listen to the track that's playing and tap the beat along, mentally or physically. Most DJ software shows the BPM automatically — but don't rely on it blindly. Learn to feel the BPM: count the beats over 15 seconds and multiply by 4.
Cue up the next track in your headphones
Load the next track onto deck 2. Press Cue or start the track and listen to it through your headphones (channel 2 only, not the mix). The track now runs in parallel without the crowd hearing it.
Match the tempo with the Pitch Fader
Compare the beat of the track that's playing (through the speakers) with the next track (in your headphones). Is the new track too fast? Pull the Pitch Fader down. Too slow? Push it up. The goal: both tracks run at exactly the same BPM.
Sync the phase (beatgridding)
Once the tempo is right, the beats also need to line up in time — that's called phase. Listen to both channels at once (Split-Cue or fade the second one in carefully). Are the kicks offset? Nudge the track back briefly or tap the Jog Wheel to shift the beat.
Blend in and keep monitoring
Once tempo and phase match, blend across slowly using the Crossfader or the EQ channels. Keep listening to the mix — tracks can drift slightly during long sets. Correct with minimal pitch adjustments.
Pro tip
Practise beatmatching with headphones only at first — no speakers. That forces you to listen to the mix actively instead of staring at visualisations. DJs who only watch the screen never really hear what's happening.
The 5 most common beatmatching mistakes
Using too wide a pitch fader range
±8% or ±16% makes fine adjustments nearly impossible. Start at ±6% — that covers most transitions and lets you work precisely.
Trusting the BPM readout blindly
Rekordbox and the rest sometimes read the BPM wrong — especially on organic music that breathes (live drums, funk). Learn to feel the BPM, not just read it.
Ignoring the phase offset
Many beginners manage to match the tempo and forget the phase. Tempo and phase both have to be right. Use split cue, or listen to both channels together for a moment.
Blending in too early
Only blend once tempo AND phase are stable — not the first moment they line up. Hold the new track in balance for at least 8 bars before you start the blend.
Not correcting the drift
Even after a perfect start, tracks slowly drift apart (tiny BPM differences add up). Keep the mix actively in your ear and correct with minimal jogwheel nudges.

Frequently asked questions about beatmatching
How long does it take to learn beatmatching?
You'll learn the basics — getting the tempo close and roughly syncing up — in 1–2 weeks with 20–30 minutes of practice a day. Truly clean manual beatmatching that stays precise even in long sets takes 4–8 weeks. With a structured learning path like DJLearn, it goes noticeably faster.
Should I learn with the Sync button or manually?
Learn manually first. The Sync button is a tool for professionals who already understand what it does — not a shortcut for beginners. Anyone who can beatmatch manually understands the mix on a different level: they notice drift, react faster to unexpected tempo changes, and can play on gear that has no Sync (e.g. older CDJs or vinyl).
What's the difference between BPM and phase?
BPM (beats per minute) is the tempo — how fast a track runs. Phase describes the timing position of the beats relative to each other. Two tracks can run at exactly the same BPM but be out of phase: the mix will still sound wrong, because kick and kick don't land together but offset from each other.
Why does my mix drift apart after a few seconds?
This happens to almost every beginner and has two causes: (1) The tempo isn't matched precisely enough yet — even a 0.1 BPM difference produces audible drift after 30 seconds. (2) The pitch fader jumps slightly when you let go of it. Solution: make fine corrections with the jog wheel during the mix, or set the pitch fader even more precisely.
Can I learn beatmatching on any DJ controller?
Yes — any controller with pitch faders (so almost all of them) works for practising beatmatching. A controller with large jog wheels is recommended, as they allow finer control. The AlphaTheta DDJ-FLX4, the DDJ-REV1 or the Hercules Inpulse 500 are solid entry-level options. (The DDJ-400 named here previously is no longer made — the FLX4 is its successor.)
What is split cue and do I need it?
Split cue is a feature that divides your headphones into two halves: on the left you hear the live mix, on the right the track you're cueing up. This lets you compare directly without pressing any buttons. Very handy — but learn without it first, so you truly internalise the basic process.
