Detailed explanation
The sync button analyses the beat grid of both tracks, works out the BPM difference and adjusts the tempo fader for you. Some implementations also line up the beat phase. Sync is fully accepted in the modern DJ world and used by plenty of professionals. The catch: with a wrong beat grid, sync gets it wrong too. And sync never solves the phrasing problem — a musically wrong transition stays wrong.
In practice
Sync takes the matching off your hands, but not the responsibility. It works from the beat grid, and if the grid is wrong the sync is wrong — in a way that is harder to repair than a hand-made mix. In practice that means sync is a tool for people who could do without it. Anyone who has never matched by hand notices a grid error only once the room has already heard it.
