Reverb

Reverb effect that creates a sense of space.

Detailed explanation

Reverb simulates the sound of a physical space — as if the music were echoing around a large hall. In DJing it is used when fading a track out: switch reverb on and the track rings out organically instead of stopping dead. Subtler than echo or delay. Especially suited to atmospheric genres such as deep house and ambient techno. Like every time-based effect: lock it to the beat.

In practice

A short reverb on the last hit lets a track ring out instead of cutting it off. That is the most sensible use of reverb in the booth. Used for longer it quickly becomes a problem: reverb smears the transients, which are exactly the edges the room uses to find the beat. Two tracks with reverb at the same time do not sound bigger, they sound unclear.
