Waveform
The visual representation of the audio signal.
Detailed explanation
The waveform is the visual representation of an audio signal in DJ software. rekordbox colour-codes waveforms by frequency range: red/orange = bass (kicks), green = mids (synths, vocals), blue = highs (hi-hats, cymbals). The overview waveform shows the whole track — ideal for reading structure. The scrolling waveform shows around 10 seconds — ideal for checking beat alignment.
In practice
The waveform tells you the structure of a track before you have heard it: where the breakdown sits, how long the intro is, where the energy comes back. Which is exactly why it is also a trap. Anyone looking at the screen instead of listening is matching pictures rather than beats — and then stands in a club in front of a player with a smaller display and is lost.
