Analysis happens without you starting it
Drag a track into a deck and it gets analysed as you do. Traktor detects the tempo and builds the beatgrid from it — the basis for sync, loops and every beatjump. In most cases the detection is right and you notice none of it.
The manual also names when it gets it wrong: tracks with very complex rhythms or uneven tempo — it cites tape-machine recordings and warped vinyl. Those tracks need manual correction, and that is why the beatgrid section further down is as detailed as it is.
From the browser to your first clean transition
Six steps, and the third one matters most. Check the grid only after a transition has already fallen apart and you will look for the fault in the wrong place.
Open and sort the browser
The browse encoder is the hub: press to open the browser, turn to scroll the folders, press to open a folder or load a track. The BACK button goes up a level, VIEW leaves the browser. You can sort by title, artist, BPM, import date, # and key — performance knob 1 picks the category, ON button 1 flips the order.
Load a track — that analyses it
A loaded track gets analysed. There is no separate analysis run you could forget and no queue. What you have afterwards: tempo, beatgrid and a detected key shown in the KEY window.
Check the beatgrid before you need it
Display button 3 zooms into the waveform. Check whether the beat marker at the start of the track sits exactly on the start of the waveform. If it sits off, the track cannot be synced with any other — and then it is the mix that fails later, not your ears.
Fix a wrong grid with four knobs
EDIT opens beatgrid mode with a four-bar reference loop. OFFSET puts the first beat marker on the first peak, BPM and FINE bring the following beats onto their markers, SCAN scrolls through the track to check. If nothing fits any more: RST resets to the detected values. If everything fits: LOCK protects the grid against the next analysis run.
Set cue points — seven of them are yours
In HOTCUE mode pad 1 always holds the automatic start cue. You set your own from pad 2 onwards by pressing an unlit pad; SHIFT plus pad deletes again. Snap mode pulls every cue onto the nearest beat — you do not have to hit it to the millimetre.
Engage keylock before you touch the tempo
Display button 2 opens the KEY window, a press on the browse encoder engages keylock — LOCK lights white. Only then change the tempo, or the pitch travels with it. And if you now TURN that encoder rather than press it, you shift the key without touching the tempo.
The four knobs of beatgrid mode
The EDIT button opens beatgrid mode. The display then shows a four-bar loop at the current position, based on the detected BPM value and serving as your reference. From there you work with the four performance knobs and three helper buttons — each has exactly one job.

Keylock — and the knob that does more
Keylock decouples pitch from tempo: the track runs faster or slower but keeps sounding in its own key. Without it every tempo change drags the pitch along — at three per cent you barely hear it, at six a voice sounds like a different person.
The real difference from Serato sits on that same knob: press to toggle keylock, turn to shift the key without touching the tempo. That lets you bring a track into a matching key instead of hunting for another one. Serato charges for a separate expansion to do the same thing — in Traktor it is built in.
What Traktor does differently
Four points where day-to-day work feels different from rekordbox and Serato. Everything else is named differently and means the same.
Key sits on a knob
Press keylock to toggle it, turn it to shift the key — with no tempo change. Serato charges for a separate expansion to do that. If you mix harmonically, it saves you half the searching.
The first cue is already set
Pad 1 always carries the start cue placed automatically on load. So you have eight cue points, but seven of them are yours — that is not a bug, it is the split Traktor assumes.
Setting them imprecisely is fine
Snap mode pulls every hot cue you set to the nearest beat, and it is on by default. So you are allowed to press late. Anyone switching it off to place cues deliberately off the beat should know they did.
Length first, then press
On the loop encoder you turn to choose a length between 32 beats and 1/32, then press to set the loop at the current position. SHIFT and turn moves it through the track. An unlit pad saves it.
Five mistakes at the start
Checking the grid during a set
A crooked grid does not announce itself on load — it shows up eight bars into a transition, and by then nothing can be rescued. Checking costs ten seconds a track and belongs to preparation, not to the gig.
Reaching for FINE when SHIFT + BPM is the answer
If Traktor read double or half the tempo, that is one move, not fine work. Trimming instead means creeping for an hour towards a value one button press would have given you.
Never locking the grid
Without LOCK, next time you cannot tell which tracks have been checked — so you either check everything twice or nothing at all. The padlock in the browser is the only reminder you get.
Treating keylock as a cure-all
Keylock holds the key, but it computes its way there. Small tempo changes are inaudible; shift by ten per cent and lean on keylock, and what you end up hearing is the software, not the track.
Filling all eight pads with cues
Seven free points sound like few and are too many in a set. Mark the same two or three places in every track — entry, break, exit — and you will find them in the dark. Set eight and you will be searching.

When does Traktor analyse a track?

How many hot cues can I set in Traktor?

That leaves seven free pads, and if you plan your system around eight, everything shifts by one. Setting one means pressing an unlit pad, whether the track is playing or stopped. Deleting is SHIFT plus that same pad.
Do I have to hit the beat exactly when setting a hot cue?
No, and that is one of Traktor's most pleasant defaults. Snap mode is on out of the box — you can tell by the lit S at the top of the software — and pulls every hot cue you set onto the nearest beat. So triggering a cue always fires on a beat, even if your finger was off.
Can Traktor change a track's key?
Yes, and it is built in — unlike Serato, where that needs a paid expansion. The catch is that you will barely find it without the manual: it sits on the same control as keylock. Display button 2 opens the KEY window, PRESSING the browse encoder engages keylock (LOCK lights white), and TURNING that same encoder afterwards shifts the key without touching the tempo.
How do I set a loop in Traktor?
Unlike many other programs, you do not set an in and an out point. You choose the LENGTH — by turning the loop encoder, from 32 beats down to a thirty-second — and then press that same encoder. The loop appears at the current position. The length can be changed before and while the loop runs; SHIFT plus turn moves the loop through the track in steps of the set length.
How do I fix a wrong beatgrid?
The EDIT button opens beatgrid mode; a four-bar loop appears in the display as a reference. Four knobs do the work: OFFSET moves the waveform under the grid, BPM corrects coarsely, FINE tunes it, SCAN scrolls through the track to check. SHIFT plus BPM doubles or halves the value — the quickest fix when Traktor read the tempo at twice the speed. At the end LOCK locks the grid; locked tracks carry a small padlock in the browser.
Does Traktor have a metronome for checking?
Yes, and it is hidden in beatgrid mode: the tick produces an audible pulse on every beat that you line up against the running track. Important for a gig: the tick is only audible on the CUE output, that is in your headphones, not on the MAIN output. So you can check live without anybody noticing.
What does FLUX mode do?
It keeps a second, invisible playhead running along the normal course of the track while you loop, jump to a cue or skip back and forth. Release the pad and playback continues not from the cue position but from where the track would be without you. In practice: you can play around mid-set without losing the phrasing — the main reason to meet this button early.
