Timestamps instead of “it was alright”
The tool — try it now
A clock and four keys. You play your own recording in your own player and start the clock alongside it; every time something stands out, you press transition, levels, energy or track choice. At the end there is a list of timestamps you can copy and work through on a second listen.
What you learn with it
Why an analysis without notes leads nowhere. While listening, something catches your ear at minute 6 and something else at minute 14 — and at the end you remember an overall impression you cannot act on. Four categories with timestamps turn that into a list you work through. And the distribution tells you what to practise next: five level marks are a gain problem, not an off day.
How to use the tool
Get your recording ready in your own player
Start both at the same time: playback there, “Start” here
Press the matching key whenever something stands out — or 1 to 4 on the keyboard
Copy the notes at the end and work through them on a second listen
Count which category comes up most: that is your topic for next week
Better to set a mark too early than not at all — when working through it you rewind a few seconds, which costs nothing. And judge nothing while the recording runs: marking is note-taking, the verdict comes on the second pass.
Common mistakes
Starting the clock later than the recording. Every timestamp then points at the wrong spot and the whole list is useless.
Only marking transitions. Levels and the energy curve are the two things you hear least while playing and most clearly in the recording.
Filing the list away without replaying a single spot.

Take the time in one go — hearing and timing develop through repetition, not through reading.
You have it when you have listened through a recording of your own, marked at least three spots and played exactly one of them again.
Questions about this tool
Why set markers instead of writing things down afterwards?
Because memory works while listening and summarises while remembering. At minute six you notice one thing, at minute fourteen another — what remains at the end is an overall impression, and that is worthless as an instruction. A timestamp points at a spot you can find again and play again.
How many markers are normal?
On a first mix, rather too many than too few — twenty in half an hour is not bad news but a good yield. Later there will be fewer, and that is the real progress bar: when the same recording length carries half as many markers after some weeks, you are not hearing worse, you are playing better.
Should I judge while listening?
No. Marking and judging are two passes, and mixing them makes both worse: thinking about one spot means not hearing the next thirty seconds. Listen through and mark first, then go back and decide.
What do I do with the list?
Play exactly one of the spots again — not all of them. An analysis that yields twenty points and leads to no repetition is an occupation. Take the transition that bothers you most, run it three times, and keep the list for next time.
