Cleaning:
Dry beats every product.

A controller lasts years if nobody maintains it — and weeks if somebody maintains it wrongly. The difference is not effort but a handful of things you do NOT do.

In short

Most gear does not die of wear but of dust, sugar and the wrong product. The manufacturer instruction is shorter than you would think: a dry, soft cloth, no organic, acidic or alkaline cleaners. Everything else is prevention — and a crackling fader is not a cleaning problem at all.

What the manufacturers actually say

The instruction in the manual is remarkably short: wipe with a dry, soft cloth, and explicitly use no organic cleaners and no acidic or alkaline agents. Nothing else is there — and that is not an omission but the answer.

That rules out more than it first sounds like: washing-up liquid, glass cleaner, disinfectant, contact sprays. All of them are somewhere in that list. What is missing is exactly what most people are looking for — a product that helps. There is none; there is only prevention and replacement.

Where the dirt actually sits

Four spots, and a cloth only helps at one of them.

The one rule: never spray anything onto the device

Even if a product were allowed, it belongs on the cloth and never on the device. Anything sprayed runs — and it runs downwards, which is exactly where faders, knobs and circuit board sit. Gear rarely dies of what was on top of it, but of what ran inside.

The same goes for canned air held right up close: it drives the dust in rather than out. Keep some distance and angle it, so the dust has a way out.

The routine, step by step

Six steps, about ten minutes together. Two of them happen before you plug in, not after.

Unplug power and computer

Before any wiping: power supply out, USB off. Not because of shocks but because a cloth sweeps across faders and buttons — and a powered device reads every one of those movements as input.

Wipe with a dry, soft cloth

That is the manufacturer instruction, word for word: wipe with a dry, soft cloth. No water, no washing-up liquid, no microfibre cloth still damp from the sink.

Blow dust out of the gaps, do not wipe it

Between faders and around buttons a cloth only pushes dust deeper in. A blower or canned air from a little distance takes it out instead of spreading it.

Clean sockets and plugs before connecting

This is in the manual too: clean the sockets and plugs before connecting. A contact with a film of dust transfers worse, and whatever you push in once stays in.

Move drinks out of reach of the booth

The most common cause of death for a controller is not age but sugar: cola and beer dry into a sticky film that seizes faders and bridges contacts. Water evaporates, sugar stays.

Let it acclimatise after transport

Gear that comes from a cold car into a warm room condenses inside — and switched on, condensation becomes a short. Half an hour of standing still costs nothing.

Five mistakes that cost you gear

Spraying cleaner straight onto the device

Anything sprayed runs downwards — exactly where the faders and the circuit board are. If at all, then onto the cloth.

Contact cleaner into the fader

Many of these sprays attack plastics and lubricant, and there is no getting them out again. A crackling fader is usually wear anyway, not dirt.

Switching on to test after a spill

Switching on is exactly what causes the damage the liquid alone had not caused yet. Dry first, test later.

Plugging in straight from a cold car

Moisture condenses inside. Half an hour of standing is the whole trick.

Leaving the device uncovered in the room

Most dust does not land on it while playing but during the days in between. A cloth over the top is the single most effective measure.

What helps in the long run

Prevention beats cleaning by a distance — four of these cost nothing.

  • A cover

    A cloth is enough. Cheaper and more effective than any cleaning.

  • Drinks outside arm reach

    The rule that takes no exception — not even your own.

  • A dry, soft cloth in the bag

    So it happens after the gig and not eventually.

  • A padded transport bag

    What slides around in a car breaks at the controls, not the housing.

  • The serial number written down

    Every workshop and every insurer asks for it — and you cannot find it once the device is gone.

Common questions

My fader crackles when I move it — what do I clean it with?

To begin with, nothing: a crackling fader is usually not a cleaning problem but a wear problem. The conductive track inside wears down, and no product brings it back. What helps from outside is blowing dust out of the slot. If the crackle stays, the fader is due — on many devices it is a spare part a workshop swaps in half an hour.

Can I use contact cleaner?

The manuals forbid organic cleaners as well as acidic or alkaline agents — and contact cleaner is precisely an organic solvent. That is our reading of the instruction, not a manufacturer statement about contact cleaner specifically; the manual does not name the product. Everything still argues against it: many of these sprays attack plastics and lubricant, and whatever has run into a fader once is not coming out again.

What about the screen on the device?

Same as the housing: a dry, soft cloth. Glass cleaner belongs on windows, not on a coated display. Pressure achieves nothing here — wiping harder only scratches.

How often should I clean?

A quick wipe and a cover after every gig, a thorough go with air every few months. The real point is not the interval but the trigger: if you do not check straight after a night with a spilled drink, you find the problem when the fader is already sticking.

Does a cover actually help?

It is the single most effective measure and the cheapest. Most dust does not land on the device while you play but during the days in between, when it sits open in the room. A cloth is enough.

When is a workshop worth it?

When a control jumps, a channel stays silent, or something has run inside. With liquid: switch off immediately, pull the power, and do NOT switch it back on to test — switching on is exactly what causes the damage the drink alone had not caused yet.
