What a sound check is — and what it is not
It is not a matter of taste and not about shaping the sound. It answers four questions, in a fixed order, and each has a visible answer: is signal arriving on both decks? are the levels working in the right range? can you hear yourself without turning the room up? and do you know what to do when something fails mid-set?
The order is the whole trick, and it follows the signal chain: Starting with volume checks nothing — it only sets how loud a fault you have not found yet is going to be.
The four checks
Bottom to top through the signal chain: signal first, then its level, then your own monitoring, then the fallback. Each stage assumes the one below it.

The one rule: gain makes it loud, master makes it LOUD
The gain at the channel decides how strongly the signal enters the mixer — the master decides how strongly it enters the room. Both feel the same under your hand and are fundamentally different in effect: too much gain already distorts inside the mixer, and no master in the world cleans that up again.
In practice: set the gain once during the sound check and then leave it alone. During the set you use gain to match the loudness of two tracks, but you do not use it to make the night louder. That is what the master is for, and the booth is for you.
The routine, step by step
Six steps, in this order. Anyone who has done them twice no longer needs the list — by the third gig it runs by itself.
Arrive half an hour before the first guest
Not before your slot — before the GUESTS. While the room is empty you may turn things up, pull cables and ask questions. Once people are in, every test is a disturbance and every problem is public.
Ask who owns the system
One sentence at the bar: „Who looks after the sound tonight?“ The answer decides whether you may touch the master at all — and who to call when it hums. In many venues there is nobody; that is an answer too, and then it is you.
Plug in while it is quiet
Channel faders down, gain down, then connect. A cable pushed into an open chain pops — and that pop hits tweeters at full power, tweeters that cost more than your controller.
Set gain at the channel, not the master
Play a track you know and that is NOT the loudest of your night. Channel fader at playing position, then raise the gain until the meter works in its upper range and the peaks stay out of the red. Only then does the master decide how loud the room is.
Set monitor and room separately
The booth knob is not the master. It feeds the speaker pointing AT you; the master feeds the room. Mix the two up and you turn up the hall because you cannot hear yourself — the most common reason a night starts too loud.
Walk into the room once
Leave a track running and stand where the guests will stand — middle, back, once against the wall. Every system sounds good in the booth; in the room you hear the boom in the corner and the hole in the middle. What you hear there is the night, not what comes out of the monitor.
Five mistakes you only make once
Turning up the master instead of the gain
The classic: it is too quiet, so up goes the master — and the next track, mastered louder, drives the system into the red. Gain belongs per channel, the master once for the room.
Doing the check with your loudest track
Then every level fits that one track and everything else sounds thin. Take a middling one you know by heart.
Never leaving the booth
The monitor points at you and therefore always sounds good. How it sounds in the room is something you only know once you have stood there.
Arriving once guests are already there
From then on every test is a disturbance and every problem is public. The half hour before costs nothing and saves the night.
Plugging in with the chain open
Channel fader and gain down, then the cable — otherwise the pop hits the tweeters at full power. This is the mistake that costs money rather than just face.
The checklist for the night
Short enough to keep in your head. If one line is not ticked, you do not start.
Both decks produce sound
In the room AND in the headphones, each channel checked on its own.
Headphones work on both sides
Switch the cue, both cups, both decks.
The booth is separately adjustable
Turn it up without the room getting louder — tried once.
Nothing is lighting up red
Not at the mixer, not at the amp, not even briefly on peaks.
A spare is within reach
Second cable, second USB stick, and you know who to call if something dies.
⚠️ Deliberately no number here for volume itself. How loud a night may be depends on the room, the system and your own hearing — a topic of its own, with sources of its own. What occupational safety says about it, and where it becomes measurably harmful, is in the hearing protection guide. A sound check makes it sound clean; it does not make it safely loud.
Common questions
How long does a sound check take?
Ten minutes if you know what you are checking. The half hour of lead time is not for the check itself but for what goes wrong: a missing cable, a channel with no sound, a caretaker who holds the key to the amp cupboard.
What if there is no sound check at all?
That is the normal case when you take over mid-night. Then you check everything that works WITHOUT sound: connect, roughly match the gain on the silent channel to your predecessor's setting, test the headphones, keep a spare cable within reach. Your first track is the sound check — take one you know by heart and bring the fader in slowly.
How loud should I set the levels?
Setting levels is not about volume but about headroom: the meter should work in its upper range and the peaks should NOT go red. How loud the room ends up is the master's job — and at the start of the night that belongs noticeably lower than at peak time. A set already maxed out at 10pm has nothing left to build at 1am.
Do I have to bring my own headphones?
Yes. Not out of vanity, but because you know yours: you know how bass sounds in them and how loud „too loud“ is. Borrowed headphones shift both — and quite often there are none at all.
What is the difference between master and booth?
Master is the room, booth is the speaker pointing at you. Two separate knobs for two separate jobs — and that is exactly why they are separate: you should be able to hear yourself louder without dragging the hall along. If you cannot hear yourself, the booth knob is almost always the one you mean, and almost never the master.
A red light is on at the amp — now what?
Master down, immediately. A red indicator on an amp or a limiter means the system is getting more than it can cleanly put out — from there on it does not get louder, only worse, and eventually something breaks. If it already lights up during the sound check, your gain is too high, not the room too quiet.
