Silent disco:
the room does not answer.

A silent disco looks like a normal gig and is one of the most unusual there is in craft terms. Everything DJs normally base decisions on — how the bass sits in the room, how the floor sounds, whether it is too loud — falls away. What remains is a signal going straight into the ear and a volume every guest sets for themselves.

At a silent disco you lose the most important feedback there is: the room. No reverb, no pressure wave from the bass, and the floor sounds different to you than to every guest — because everyone sets their own volume. Three consequences: your mix has to work over headphones (bass swaps hit more directly there, reverb effects thinner), you need a level pass so the channels match, and you carry responsibility for a volume you do not control. What genuinely differs at the headphone

In a room your signal mixes with reverb, with structure-borne sound and with the noise of the crowd. At the headphone it does not: the guest hears exactly your master, with nothing in between. That makes clean transitions more audible — and mistakes too. A bass swap that feels soft in a club is a distinct jump at the headphone; a reverb meant to fill a room loses its purpose, because there is no room.

Then there is the social peculiarity: on several channels, several groups dance to different music in the same hall. You see a full floor and do not know how many of them are hearing you. Most systems show the selected channel at the transmitter or by colour on the headphone — that is your only real feedback, and it beats reading the crowd.

The volume you do not control

The WHO-ITU standard H.870 gives as the recommended safe limit for leisure noise below 80 dB for a maximum of 40 hours per week; for sensitive users such as children the reference value is 75 dB for 40 hours. What matters is not the moment but the dose — level times time. Under the equal energy principle: 100 dB for 16 minutes has the same impact as 80 dB for 40 hours.

For you that means two things. First: a guest dancing for three hours at maximum burns through their weekly allowance many times over — and does not notice, because the loudness of a room as a warning signal is missing. Second: if your master is sent out too quietly, every guest turns up to hear you. A properly levelled master is not a sound question here, it is a health question.

Who plays on which channel, and who switches when? With several DJs in one hall that is the only agreement that really counts — it decides whether guests can switch without hunting.
