Why two good tracks sound bad together
Every finished track is built to fill the low end on its own. Kick and bass carry all the weight down there — and they do it assuming nothing else is present. Lay a second track over it and those parts do not add up to twice the punch but to a broad, indistinct sound in which no beat has an edge any more.
The same happens one floor up, just less obviously: two vocals, two leads, two snares in the same range make a crowd rather than a fullness. Which is why EQ mixing is not about beautifying but about making room — you take away what is there twice instead of adding what is missing.
The three knobs and what each one is for
What the knobs do is stated briefly in the manual: they boost or cut the corresponding frequency of the selected channel. The centre position at 12 o'clock is the starting state the manufacturer prescribes in its own getting-started procedure — every move away from it is a decision you should be able to justify by ear.
LOW — the foundation
Kick and bass. The one range two tracks must never fill at the same time. This is where the transition actually happens; the rest is decoration.
MID — where the music lives
Vocals, melodies, snare. Two tracks collide here less dramatically but more stubbornly: it does not sound wrong, only crowded. A slight cut on the outgoing deck is usually enough.
HI — air and hiss
Hi-hats and cymbals. The range beginners love to play with, because a boost immediately sounds like “more”. It does not make the mix better, it makes it tiring — after two hours everyone in the room can tell.
The filter is not an EQ
According to the manual it lowers or raises the cutoff of a low-pass or high-pass across the entire channel. That is a gesture for the crowd, not a tidying tool — the bass swap stays the EQ's job.
Gain comes before EQ — always
AlphaTheta describes the procedure without much room for interpretation: TRIM fully anticlockwise first, EQ at 12 o'clock, channel fader down, MASTER LEVEL back. Then start the track and bring TRIM up until the channel level meter lights orange during the loudest part. Only then does the channel fader go up, and only at the very end does the master go to an appropriate volume.
The reason this comes before the EQ: two channels at different levels cannot be compared. You do not hear whether the bass is too much, only that one deck is louder — and you correct on the wrong knob. Once the level is set, your EQ moves get small instead of large.
The bass swap, step by step
Seven steps, six of which happen before the audible part. That is exactly what later separates a transition from a coincidence.
Set the starting position
Before the first sound, every control sits where the manual wants it: TRIM fully anticlockwise, the three EQ knobs at 12 o'clock, the CFX knob centred, the channel fader down, MASTER LEVEL fully back, the crossfader centred. That is not a ritual but the only state in which you know where a sound is coming from.
Set the gain before you touch anything else
Start the track, bring TRIM up slowly until the channel level meter lights orange during the loudest part. Same for the second deck. Only when both channels arrive at the same strength does a difference in loudness in the mix say something about the music instead of about your knobs.
Cue the incoming track — and take its bass away
Preview the next track in the headphones, match the tempo, and before it becomes audible at all: close LOW on that channel. So the track waits to come in with no foundation under it. Do this only once the fader is already up and the mud has been in the room already.
Start on the one of a phrase
The entry belongs at the start of a block, not at an arbitrary point. Count along until you hit it reliably — a transition stranded between two phrases sounds wrong even with a perfect EQ move.
Bring the channel fader up — without bass
Now the new track is running along, but only with mids and highs. On its own that sounds thin and is still correct: the foundation still comes from the outgoing track, and in the room nobody hears a lack — they hear a transition that has not happened yet.
The swap: one knob down, one knob up
On the next one you pull LOW back on the outgoing deck and open LOW on the new one — as a single movement, not two decisions. That is the moment the foundation changes hands, and when the movement is right, nobody notices.
Clear the mids and take the old track out
Two vocals or two leads in the same range are the second source of mud. Pull MID back a little on the outgoing deck, then take the channel fader down — and finally return both channels' EQ knobs to 12 o'clock, so the next transition starts from scratch.
When the controller does it for you
Newer units automate this. With Smart Fader switched on, the DDJ-FLX4 adjusts EQ LOW automatically to match the fader position: if the sound only runs through deck 1, EQ LOW on deck 2 sits at its minimum — and vice versa. The actual knob position does not move, only the sound does. So the manufacturer considers the bass swap fundamental enough to build it in; on someone else's gear you still do it yourself.
The mistakes you can hear in the room
Boosting instead of cutting
The new track feels weak, so you turn its bass up — and two seconds later everything is too loud and the master is red. Cut on the other deck instead. The rule behind it: an EQ that mostly sits right of centre is a level problem.
Cutting the bass only once the fader is up
By then the mud has already been in the room. The incoming track waits with LOW closed, not open — the order costs nothing and saves every transition.
Leaving both basslines half open
The compromise that isn't one: two half basslines are still two. While practising the knob goes fully closed, so that you hear at all what it was carrying.
Setting gain by feel instead of by meter
The manufacturer gives a visible target state — the channel meter lights orange during the loudest part. Turn it up by ear instead and the reference point moves with every track, which is why some transitions collapse.
Leaving the knobs where they ended up
The controls stay put and the next mix starts with the bass half closed on one channel. Returning to 12 o'clock is part of the transition — the last step of this one, not the first of the next.
Four exercises that make the difference
Each one takes twenty minutes and needs exactly two tracks. Do them for a week and you will hear the difference in your own recording.
Levels only
Load ten tracks and set the level on each until the meter lights orange during the loudest part. No mixing. After ten runs you find the position before you look.
Switch blind
Let two tracks run and swap the bass back and forth with your eyes closed. What you learn is not the movement but the sound a clean handover makes.
The twenty
One single transition, twenty times in a row, recorded. By the third it is boring, by the twelfth the timing sits. That is exactly what the exercise is for.
Listen the next day
Play back yesterday's recording and answer one question only: at which second were two basslines running at once? That single spot is today's practice programme.

Frequently asked questions about EQ mixing
What does the EQ on a DJ mixer actually do?
It boosts or cuts one frequency range of that channel — nothing more. Three knobs per channel, HI, MID and LOW, each responsible for one band. The centre position (12 o'clock) is the neutral starting point the manual itself prescribes: from there you take away what is too much, rather than adding what is missing.
Why does my mix sound muddy when both tracks sound fine?
Because two basslines are running at once. Each track is mixed to fill the low end on its own — two of them stacked don't give twice the weight, they give mud. The way out is always the same: the incoming track arrives without bass, and you hand it the bass exactly when the outgoing one gives it up.
How do I set gain or TRIM properly?
AlphaTheta gives a concrete procedure: turn TRIM fully anticlockwise first, then bring it up until the channel level meter lights orange during the loudest part of the track. That is the reference point for everything else — a channel already running too hot before the EQ cannot be rescued by any knob.
Do I have to cut the bass completely during a transition?
While you're learning, yes; later, by ear. Fully closed is the position where you hear what the bass was actually carrying, and it is the most forgiving. Turning the knob only halfway back still leaves two basslines, just quieter. Later you can open up earlier depending on the track; the order stays the same.
EQ or filter — when do I use which?
The filter is an effect across the whole channel: turned left it gradually lowers the cutoff of a low-pass, turned right it raises the cutoff of a high-pass. It is dramatic and audible as a gesture. The EQ works within one band and stays unnoticed. For the bass swap you use the EQ; for a build the crowd is meant to notice, the filter.
My controller has Smart Fader — does it do the bass swap for me?
Partly, yes. With Smart Fader on, the unit adjusts EQ LOW automatically to follow the fader: if only deck 1 is playing, EQ LOW on deck 2 sits at its minimum, and the other way round. That is exactly the move this guide is about — the manufacturer considers it fundamental enough to automate. Learn it by hand anyway: on someone else's gear the function isn't there.
How do I practise EQ mixing without losing focus?
One transition, two tracks, twenty repetitions — and nothing else. No effects, no new track, no recording for an audience. Record the twenty runs and listen the next day: the moment where the bass arrives too early or too late is unmissable on the recording and almost invisible while playing.
Do I need a mixer with an isolator or four bands?
No. What separates a beginner's mix from a clean one is not the type of EQ but the order of the moves. A fourth knob, or an isolator that removes a band entirely, changes how the work feels — it does not replace counting, cueing and the single moment where the bass changes hands.
