Why tidiness is worth seconds
The tool — try it now
The same task twice: find one particular track. Round one shows a collection the way it looks right after downloading — filenames like “01_final_MIX.mp3”, everything in one pile. Round two shows the same tracks in an organised library: grouped by occasion, “artist — title”, with BPM and key. The clock runs both times.
What you learn with it
Why playlists and clean names are not tidiness but craft. At the player you scroll with a knob while the current track runs out — the seconds from round one cost you the transition there. Once you have measured the difference, you tidy up.
How to use the tool
Start round one — the track you are looking for is shown at the top
Find it in the filename list and click it; the clock is running
Round two: the same search in the organised library
At the end both times stand side by side
“New track” for another round — the order is reshuffled
Apply the result to your own collection: a folder called “New” is not a problem as long as it is emptied once a week. It becomes a problem when it IS the library.
Common mistakes
Waiting to tidy up until the collection is large. At two thousand tracks it is a project; at two hundred it is a habit.
Sorting by genre and searching by tempo in the set. The order has to match the question you ask at the decks.
Creating playlists and never touching them again. Last year's playlist is a store, not a work surface.

Take the time in one go — hearing and timing develop through repetition, not through reading.
You have it when you can find a given track in your own collection in under ten seconds — without the search box.
Questions about this tool
Why do a few seconds of searching matter at all?
Because they do not fall in a break but while the current track is running out. You are not searching calmly, you are searching against a clock nobody can stop — and the closer the end comes, the worse you search. Order does not buy you comfort, it buys you attention for the transition.
How should I name files?
So that artist and title are in the name and nothing else. Source tags, version numbers and words like “final” help while downloading and get in the way forever after. The one test: can you recognise the track in a list of two hundred without playing it?
Playlists or folders?
Both, for different jobs. Folders are your store and may be sorted by origin. Playlists are your work surface and are sorted by use — by situation, tempo or night, not by genre. A track may sit in several playlists; in the store it lives once.
Is a folder called “New” a problem?
No, as long as it empties once a week. It becomes a problem when it IS the library — then everything sits in one place in download order, which is exactly the collection from round one of this exercise.
