What you learn with it
The one order that prevents the most expensive beginner mistake. A controller sends a short spike to its output when switched on; if the speakers are already on, it hits the tweeters unchecked. That costs hardware rather than a transition — and it happens quietly enough that you only notice weeks later.

Tearing down runs the same chain backwards: master down, speakers off, then the rest. And anyone re-plugging while things run switches the speakers OFF first — turning them down is not enough, the spike gets through anyway.
Common mistakes
Leaving the speakers on while powering everything else up. The most expensive beginner's mistake there is.
Turning down instead of switching off. Quiet is not off.
Forgetting the order when packing down — it runs backwards, and backwards means speakers off first.

Questions about this tool
Why do the speakers go on last and off first?
Because everything before them briefly puts voltage on the output when switched on or off. If the speakers are already on and turned up at that moment, they reproduce that pulse in full — as a bang. Unpleasant for ears and, in the worst case, expensive for the speakers. With them off, the same thing happens silently.
Do I really have to turn every control to zero?
The output controls, yes. It is not tidiness but the fact that you do not know where they were — after a night the master is often well up, and the next day's first sound then arrives at full force. Starting at zero costs ten seconds and takes the consequence out of the mistake.
What applies when I repatch during operation?
Speakers off, not just down. A plug pulled or pushed under voltage produces exactly the same pulse as switching on — and turned down is not off, it is quiet. If you repatch often, the best habit is the same movement every time.
Does this apply to active speakers and small systems?
Yes, and with active speakers it matters especially, because the amplifier sits inside the box: there is nothing left between the pulse and the cone. On small systems the damage is smaller but the bang is just as present — and the order costs nothing whatever the size of the setup.
