Speakers on last, off first
Six shuffled steps: cable up, laptop, controller, knobs to zero, speakers, bring up the master. Put them in the order a setup is powered up — and with every wrong pick you read what would have come out of the speakers at that exact moment.
What you learn with it
The one order that prevents the most expensive beginner mistake. A controller sends a short spike to its output when switched on; if the speakers are already on, it hits the tweeters unchecked. That costs hardware rather than a transition — and it happens quietly enough that you only notice weeks later.

Tearing down runs the same chain backwards: master down, speakers off, then the rest. And anyone re-plugging while things run switches the speakers OFF first — turning them down is not enough, the spike gets through anyway.
