DJ Tool
Filter Trainer
Ride it, never park it
A loop runs through a single filter knob: turn left and the low-pass eats the highs, turn right and the high-pass takes the bass, and in the centre the original sound plays. Your task is not a setting but a movement — far to one side across several beats, and back to the centre exactly on the one. No hardware, no music files.
What you learn with it
What low-pass and high-pass actually sound like before you need them in a set — and the rule that gives away a beginner from across the room: a filter is a sweep with a beginning and an end, not a knob you leave somewhere. Park it here and the tool will tell you.
How to use the tool
Start the loop — kick, hi-hat and bass run in time
Slowly turn left: the highs disappear, it gets muffled and distant
Turn right past the centre: the bass goes, it gets thin
Now the exercise: far to one side across at least four beats — and back to the centre on the one of the next bar
Three clean sweeps in a row and the move is yours
Ride it more slowly than you think. A filter sweep may take bars — it is part of the music, not its interruption. And never leave the knob somewhere: half-open, every track sounds like a broken sound system.
The tool — try it now
15–30 minutes
Take the time in one go — hearing and timing develop through repetition, not through reading.
