For a musical echo: set the delay to a 1/4 note or a 1/8 note. At 128 BPM a 1/4 note is 468 ms — enter that straight into your FX unit.
Common mistakes
Entering the value once and forgetting it after the next tempo change — the effect then runs against the track instead of with it.
Trying to enter time values to the millisecond. Your ear cannot hear the difference; the order of magnitude is what decides.
Leaving delay tails running across a transition. The repeat sits in the OLD track's tempo and trips over the new one.

Questions about this tool
Why would a DJ need milliseconds?
For effects that are meant to sit in time. A delay repeating somewhere between the beats sounds like an accident; one on a quarter or eighth note sounds deliberate. Some devices and programs work it out themselves, older and external effect units do not — there you type the value in by hand.
How long does a loop actually last?
It depends on tempo alone, and the arithmetic never changes: four beats make a bar, and one beat lasts sixty seconds divided by the tempo. Once you hold that in your head for your usual tempo, you know the moment you set a loop how much time you have just bought — and whether it reaches the end of the phrase.
What is a dotted eighth and why do DJs use it?
A dotted eighth is one and a half eighths long. A delay on that value does not line up with the grid but runs against it — which produces the floating pattern familiar from a lot of electronic production. It is the only common value that deliberately sits BESIDE the beat.
Do I have to recalculate when I change the tempo?
Yes — and that is the most common reason an effect suddenly sounds wrong. Time values hang off the tempo; pull the tempo fader and the millisecond value you entered no longer fits. Devices with their own tempo detection follow along, hard-typed values do not.
