PerformancePhase 11#S

Set

A continuous DJ performance over a stretch of time.

Detailed explanation

A DJ set is a continuous performance in which the DJ plays for an hour or more without a break. A good set has a considered energy curve: warm-up → build → peak → cooldown. The track selection, the timing of transitions and the crowd reading together make the quality of a set. Sets are typically recorded and shared on Mixcloud or SoundCloud.

In practice

A set is more than a row of good tracks. It has a beginning where the room is allowed to be empty, a middle where energy is built, and an end. Play your ten favourite tracks back to back and you have said everything after twenty minutes. Which is why most DJs plan not the order but the direction before a night — and let the room dictate the individual tracks.
