What gain actually does
The gain — called trim on some units — is the first control in the channel. It decides at what level the signal enters the mixer at all. Everything after it, EQ, filter, fader, works with whatever it lets through. Which makes it not a volume control for the room but the base setting everything else is built on.
The practical difference: correct volume on the fader and you are changing it in the middle of a transition, so the room hears both. Set it on the gain before the channel is open and the fader is free for the actual work. A channel that is already set right simply gets pushed up — nothing more.
Where the loudness differences come from
Four causes explain almost every jump. Three of them you can settle at home, one only in the booth.

What the red zone really means
Digital audio has a hard ceiling: above full scale there is no headroom, only distortion. The meter on the mixer measures those peaks, not perceived loudness — there are separate methods for that. Recommendation ITU-R BS.1770 describes how loudness is measured, and EBU R128 sets a target of -23 LUFS on top of it for broadcast. Neither was made for clubs, but together they explain why a track can feel quieter and still read higher.
For the booth that boils down to one rule: the meter may work in the top third, the peaks should not sit in the red. Red is not a target, it is a warning — and in a club there is a system behind your master with a limiter that clamps down exactly when you think it is getting loud. It does not get louder, only duller.
Setting levels in six steps
This order takes two minutes the first time and twenty seconds after a week. It is the same everywhere, controller or club mixer.
Fader closed, headphones on
You set levels before the room hears the channel. Channel to cue, fader down — now you can work calmly with nobody listening in.
Fader to working position
Not all the way up. Leave travel so you can still go up in a transition — a fader at the end stop has no reserve.
Turn the gain until the meter works in the top third
The loud part of the track is the yardstick, not the intro. Jump to the drop and set it for what actually arrives.
Check peaks, not the average
Let it run for a moment. If it flashes red regularly, pull back — once a minute is harmless, every second is not.
Compare with the playing track
Switch the headphones between both channels. If you want to adjust volume when you switch, the gain is not finished.
Set the master once and leave it
The master belongs at the start of the night, not inside a transition. Once it is set, the volume in the room stays your decision and not a side effect.

Correcting gain on the master
The master is the sum, not the channel. Balancing there changes the level of every track — including the ones that were already right.
Setting it by feel in the headphones
The headphone path has its own volume control and says nothing about the channel level. Use the meter, not the ear on the cup.
Reading red as a target
The meter shows peaks. Driving it into the red constantly costs clarity and gains nothing — the system limits anyway.
Only noticing in the transition
You set levels with the fader closed while the channel runs in your headphones. After that the fader is only a fader.
The same gain position for every track
No two tracks are mastered at the same loudness. One position for all means half of them are wrong.
How you know it is right
There is no button that confirms your levels are right. These four signs are what you have instead.
Both faders sit at a similar height
If one channel is at the top and the other halfway up, the gain is wrong — not the fader.
The master stays calm
During a transition the master meter barely moves. If it jumps, one track is arriving very differently from the other.
You use the EQ to tidy, not to amplify
The moment you boost to make something audible, the level before it was too low.
Nobody touches the volume after a change
Neither you nor anyone at the bar. That is the only sign that comes from the room instead of the equipment.
A note on the honesty of this guide: the standards and target values named here come from broadcast and streaming, not from club audio — there is no comparable, generally accepted target for club systems. They are here because they explain WHY two tracks arrive at different loudness, not as a number to dial in. What you do in the booth is experience, and it is marked as such.
Frequently asked questions
What does gain staging actually mean?
That every stage in the signal path works at a sensible level — from the source through the channel to the master. No stage should distort, and none should be so quiet that the next one has to lift it again. For DJs that means: set gain per channel, fader to working position, master set once and then left alone.
Why are two tracks at different loudness?
Because they were mastered differently and nobody evens it out for you. Streaming services do exactly that on playback — Spotify normalises to -14 LUFS — and in broadcast EBU R128 prescribes -23 LUFS. A DJ mixer has no such process: there, what is in the file is what you get, and gain is your correction.
Is it okay for the meter to go red?
Briefly and rarely is harmless, permanently is not. Red means the signal is hitting the digital ceiling; above it there is no room left, only distortion. In a club the system limits as well — so you do not get louder, only less distinct.
Gain or fader — which one sets the volume?
Gain sets how loud the track ARRIVES in the channel, the fader how much of it goes into the room. Balancing volume on the fader moves the point where your transition begins. So: gain before the mix, fader during it.
Why does my mix sound quieter in the club than at home?
Usually because at home everything ran at the end stop, while in the club there is a system with a limiter behind you. Delivering hot does not buy volume, it buys limiting — and that takes the punch out of the peaks first. With some headroom on the master the same mix sounds stronger on the same system.
Do I need to measure my tracks in LUFS as a DJ?
No. Those measurement methods come from broadcast and streaming and solve a different problem there: automatic matching across thousands of titles. In the booth you have a meter, two ears and three minutes of preparation — that is enough. The knowledge is still useful, because it explains where the differences come from.
