DJing with vinyl:
a record forgives nothing.

Vinyl is rarely the first choice today and often the second — you come from a controller and want to know what it feels like when nothing happens automatically. This page says both: what is missing on a record and what you gain instead, and how timecode closes the gap between record and computer. The practical part is in the manual; the rest is experience and is labelled as such.

In short

Two turntables have no sync, no hot cues and no auto-loop — tempo comes from the pitch fader and a finger on the platter edge. If you want both, record and file, you use timecode vinyl: a record carrying a control signal instead of music, made of a 1 kHz directional tone and a NoiseMap that tells the software where the needle is. There are four control modes, and ABS is the one that feels like a real record. Two sentences matter more than any feature: you calibrate before every set, with music running and the platter stopped — and when the record runs out, the software switches to an emergency mode by itself and keeps your tempo.

What is different on a record

Three functions disappear, and all three are among the first you learn on a controller. There is no sync — you set tempo on the pitch fader and hold it with a finger on the platter edge, slowing with pressure, speeding up with a push. There are no hot cues — your entry point is a sticker on the record edge and a note in the sleeve. And there is no auto-loop — the move it grew out of is: pull the record back and let go on the beat.

That is more work, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The gain sits on the other side: mix without sync and you hear the difference between two tempos before you see it — and that stays with you, even back behind a controller later. Vinyl is not a better route, then, but one that forces a skill you can otherwise route around.

Timecode: the record drives the file

A timecode record carries a control signal instead of music, and it has two parts. The 1 kHz directional tone reports speed and direction; the NoiseMap over the top of it, which sounds like random noise, tells the software exactly where on the record the needle sits. Because that is an analogue signal, the software cannot know what state it will arrive in — which is why it has to be configured. That configuring is what calibration is.

Calibration — before every set, not once in a lifetime

The manual puts it in one sentence: you should calibrate Serato every time you play. The reason is the stylus — it is sensitive enough that it inevitably picks up the environment along with the signal, especially in the noisy environment of a live show. So you calibrate with music playing through the system, at the level you will play at, needle on the record, platter stopped.

How you know it has taken: the inner ring in the scope is as circular as you can get it, and the number in the bottom right — the percentage of readable signal — sits close to 85 per cent. With the platter stopped and the needle down, the RPM figure in the top right must read a stable 0.0. If the slider jumps all the way right during calibration, that is not user error but interference in the chain — and the manual gives a fixed order for tracking it down.

Building a timecode setup, step by step

Seven steps, and the first two decide the other five. Skip the grounding and you will later be hunting interference you built yourself.

Ground it before you switch it on

Each turntable's grounding wire belongs at the mixer's grounding posts — before anything runs. The manual names it as the first thing to check when there is interference, and doing it right now is cheaper than hunting for it in a club later. While you are there, keep the hardware away from a power strip and keep RCA cables from lying across power cables.

Place the turntables properly

Not on the same table as the bass bins, and not directly above them — the manual names bass bins under the turntables as a cause of interference you cannot fix afterwards. A turntable is a microphone with a diamond tip: whatever the table picks up, the needle picks up.

Play music through the system — then calibrate

You do not calibrate in silence. Have music running through the same system at the level you will actually play at, put the needle on the record and leave the platter stopped. Then click and hold the estimate button until the slider stops moving. One deck at a time.

Read the four numbers in the scope

Start both turntables. The inner ring should be as circular as possible, and the readable-signal percentage in the bottom right should sit close to 85 per cent. Stop the platters again: with the needle down, the RPM figure in the top right must read a stable 0.0. If it fluctuates, move the estimate slider right until it settles.

Start in absolute mode

ABS is the default and behaves most like a normal record: start of track equals start of groove, and dropping the needle elsewhere jumps to the matching point in the track. Which is why it is the mode to build your feel for the record in — stops, starts and needle drops carry over the way you expect.

Practise beatmatching before you practise anything else

There is no sync on a turntable. You set tempo with the pitch fader and correct with a finger on the platter edge — slow it with light pressure, speed it up with a short push. That is the one skill everything else on vinyl hangs from, and it takes weeks, not evenings. Everything else comes after.

Trigger the emergency once on purpose

Let a long track run to the end of the control record and watch what happens: Serato switches to internal mode by itself and keeps your tempo. Needle back into the lead-in, wait a second — and ABS is live again. Having seen it once in peace means not panicking in a club the first time it happens on its own.

The four control modes — and the fifth that arrives by itself

You pick the mode at the top left of the virtual deck, and the three that matter have keyboard shortcuts: F1 and F6 for ABS, F2 and F7 for REL, F3 and F8 for INT — left and right deck respectively. Control plus F3 or F8 switches to internal, disables sync, resets the tempo to zero and starts playback; Serato calls it safety mode. That is the move for the moment something goes wrong and the room cannot wait for you to work out what.

Five settings that change your day to day

They live under CD/Vinyl in the manual and almost nobody mentions them — yet each one decides how the setup feels.

  • Drop to cue point

    In relative mode, dropping the needle into one of the first eight one-minute sections of the control record triggers the matching cue point — needle into the second minute means cue 2. That gives you eight hot cues you fire with the tone arm.

  • Drop to absolute position

    Detects a deliberate repositioning of the needle and moves the playhead there as if you were in absolute mode. An accidental skip does not move anything — exactly the distinction REL otherwise cannot make.

  • Anti-drift

    Stabilises fluctuating BPM readings in relative mode. The setting for turntables whose speed stability is past its best — and for the moment the displayed figure is twitchier than what you actually hear.

  • Sticker lock

    Aligns the sticker on your control record with the virtual deck's spindle position, so the two agree. Relative mode and control vinyl only — but then the sticker tells you where in the track you are at any moment.

  • USB buffer size

    Smaller chunks mean the platter's movement is translated into audio more often — less latency, but more CPU load and dropouts on weaker machines. Serato recommends starting at 5 ms and adjusting from there.

Five mistakes that cost you on a timecode setup

Calibrating once and leaving it

The manual says: every time you play. Your room is quiet, the club is not, and the stylus picks up both. Yesterday's calibration is tonight's guess.

Calibrating in silence

With no music running you are measuring an environment that will not exist while you play. The manual explicitly asks for music at the level you will play at — otherwise the threshold sits too sensitive and tips over on the first bassline.

Skipping the grounding wire

It is the first item on the manufacturer's troubleshooting list and the only one that costs two seconds. Skip it and you will be hunting a hum among power supplies, cable runs and furniture placement later — in a room where you are supposed to be playing.

Putting the bass bin under the turntable

A turntable is a microphone with a diamond tip. The manual names this exact case among the situations where signal quality cannot be improved any further — after which the only option is to play in REL and hope.

Skipping beatmatching because timecode has sync too

The sync button exists in a timecode setup as well, which is precisely why the temptation is stronger here than on a controller: the record is in your hand and the button is on the screen. Take the button and you have set up two turntables in order to rebuild a controller.

What happens on the record itself — pitch fader, finger on the platter, sticker as a cue — is experience and carries no source. There is no standard for handling an instrument, and hunting a source so the field is filled would be the source policy upside down.

Frequently asked questions about DJing with vinyl

What can't I do on two turntables that a controller does?

Three things, and they are connected: there is no sync button, no hot cues and no auto-loop. You match tempo with the pitch fader and a finger on the platter edge, you mark entry points with a sticker on the record edge plus a note in the sleeve, and a loop happens because you pull the record back and let go on the beat. It is considerably more work — and it is exactly the work the controller's functions were invented to replace.

What is timecode vinyl?

A record carrying a control signal instead of music. It has two parts: a 1 kHz directional tone that tells the software the record's speed and direction, and a NoiseMap that sounds like random noise on top and tells the software exactly where on the record the needle is. Together they let the turntable drive a file on your computer — including stops, starts, scratching and needle drops.

Absolute or relative mode — which one?

ABS is the default and comes closest to a normal record: the start of the track maps to the start of the groove, and putting the needle down elsewhere jumps to the matching point in the track. REL watches only forward and backward movement, not position — needle dropping does not work there, but you get skip-free scratching. As a beginner start with ABS, because it behaves like a record; move to REL when your control record is worn or the signal will not come clean.

What happens if the track is longer than the record?

Nothing bad, and that is the most reassuring sentence before a first gig. Reach the end of the control record in ABS or REL and Serato switches to internal mode by itself — called emergency internal — keeping the tempo you had set. The track keeps playing. You get back by putting the needle in the lead-in again; after about a second ABS or REL is active once more.

How often do I have to calibrate?

Before every set — the manual says so plainly, and it is not a hedge. A stylus is sensitive enough to pick up the room as well as the signal, and a club does not sound like your bedroom. You calibrate with music playing through the system, the needle on the record and the platter stopped — the environment you will play in has to be audible while you do it.

What do the numbers in the scope mean?

Four numbers around the green ring. Top left is the absolute position on the control record, top right the current speed in revolutions per minute, bottom left the threshold you have set and bottom right the percentage of readable signal. The last one matters most: on a properly calibrated system it should sit close to 85 per cent. The inner ring should be as circular as you can get it.

The slider jumps all the way right when I calibrate. What's wrong?

You have interference somewhere in the chain, and the manual gives the order to check it in: first the turntable's grounding wire at the mixer's grounding posts; then whether the hardware sits next to a power strip or power box and whether RCA cables lie across power-carrying cables; last the layout itself — bass bins do not belong directly under the turntables. If the RPM reading will not sit stable at 0.0 with the needle down and the platter stopped, that is the cause.

I'm digitising old records. Why is the beatgrid wrong?

Because automatic detection hits its limit there. The Traktor manual names this exact case: tracks with very complex rhythms or uneven tempo need manual correction — its examples are tape-machine recordings and warped vinyl. A recording from a warped record wobbles in tempo, and no analysis algorithm can turn that into an even grid. Correct those by hand, or play them by ear.
